Please read the WordRef User’s Guide for complete detailed instructions. Click on this field to close it. This stack and the WordRef application are being distributed under the ShareWare system. The price is $25, which should be sent to Mark Nodine 70 Mountain Avenue Riverside, RI 02915-5016 • From the main entry card, you can do several things: 1. Add bibliography entries 2. Go to the next card of any type 3. Create a BibTeX text file 4. Load the references from a BibTeX text file 5. Remove all the references from the stack 6. Sort the references by key 7. Fast-flip the references 8. Search for a card by strings 9. Create a new bibliography stack 10. Check for duplicate keys. • The reference categories are patterned after the BiBTeX system. If you would like to add more entries, just select one of the 13 reference types from the pop-up menu under the card image (second icon at left) and fill in the information. The fields above the bold horizontal bar are required. The other fields are optional. If you are not sure which type to use, just consult the User’s Guide for a description of each type of publication. Note that for WordRef or other BibTeX processors to work properly, multiple authors (or editors) should be separated by the word “and”. • You can delete a card to remove that bibliography entry. The background for each type is locked so that you cannot get rid of a background. Therefore, there will be at least 1 card of each type even though it might be empty. • If you hold down any of the modifier keys command, option, or shift, while selecting a category from the pop-up menu, it will go to the next card of that type. • Clicking on the sort icon (the third on the left) will sort all the references by key (any blank cards will be at the front). • Clicking the fast-flip icon (the fourth on the left) will flip through all the cards in the stack. • Clicking on the magnifying glass at the left will initiate a search. Occasionally, a search will be successful, but no text will be highlighted. This means that the search text was found in a comment field (click on the comment button for the card to see the comment). • If you want to create BibTeX text file (for example, to use with the WordRef application), click the “Export BibTeX…” button below and continue. You will be prompted for the name of the output text file. A HyperTalk script will write all the references from the stack into the file you name. You will be asked whether you are saving for WordRef or some other BibTeX system. If you are going to want to read the file into a stack again without losing any information (for example, to update to a new version of the stack), you should save for WordRef. The WordRef BibTeX format is not 100% compatible with other BibTeX formats (it differs in the way it handles special characters and comments), so the option is given to output for another BibTeX system. The process of saving can take several minutes, so be patient. The key of the record currently being processed is displayed in the message window during processing. • If you have a BibTeX text file for addition into the stack, then click the “Import BibTeX…” button below and continue. You will be prompted for the name of the input text file and a HyperTalk script will add the references to the stack and sort them by key. There is no attempt made to prevent duplicate keys. This process can take several minutes, so be patient. The key of the record currently being processed is displayed in the message window during processing. • The “Clear…” button will remove all the references from the stack, after checking that you really want to do so. • This stack was designed to allow for having multiple stacks for keeping several different bibliographies. For this reason, it is suggested that you keep the original stack with no references in it. Choose the button “New Stack…” below to create a new stack identical to the current one. Note that the name at the top changes to the name of the new stack. • To see if you have defined more than one reference with the same key, choose “Find Duplicate Keys” below. This will have the side-effect of sorting your references by key. • Note: This stack uses Helvetica 10 in its fields, since there are more diacriticals available than with Geneva. You should be sure this font is installed in your System. Many thanks to Herb Barad, in whose hands this stack began its life. Thanks also to Sven Axelsson who made many notable improvements to the user interface during testing. -- part contents for background part 86 ----- text ----- WordRef Stack
